Watch out
2.4L Ecotec oil consumption (Equinox, Terrain 2010–2017)
The 2.4 Ecotec drinks oil and can seize if the level drops. Check it every 1,000 km — the oil light comes on too late.

Common
Cruze 1.4T coolant leaks
Water pump, thermostat housing and turbo oil/coolant feed lines leak on the 1.4 turbo. A sweet smell under the hood is the giveaway.
-
Watch out
AFM lifter failure on 5.3L V8 (Silverado, Tahoe)
Active Fuel Management lifters collapse, wiping cam lobes — a ticking noise on startup is the early warning. Later DFM engines are better but not immune.
-
Common
8-speed transmission shudder (2015–2019 trucks)
Torque converter shudder feels like driving over rumble strips. A fluid flush with the updated GM fluid often cures it — don’t let a shop sell you a rebuild first.
Chevrolet Equinox
-
Watch out
2.4L oil consumption (2010–2017)
The second-gen Equinox’s 2.4 is one of GM’s worst oil drinkers. Check oil weekly; many engines died from neglected levels.
Chevrolet Cruze
-
Common
1.4T cooling system leaks
The Cruze’s 1.4 turbo leaks coolant from the water pump, thermostat housing and turbo lines. Budget for cooling work on any used example.
Chevrolet Silverado
-
Watch out
AFM/DFM lifter failures (5.3L)
Cylinder-deactivation lifters fail on 2007–2013 trucks and some 2019–2021 models. A startup tick means get it diagnosed before the cam is wiped.
