Known issues
-
Watch out
Air suspension failures
Air bags, compressors and height sensors fail across the range — the classic symptom is a car sitting low overnight. Budget for it on any used Land Rover.
-
Watch out
Timing chains on older AJ-V8 (2010–2012 5.0L)
Chains and tensioners wear on the 5.0 V8; the job is engine-out expensive. Rattle on startup means walk away unless the price reflects it.
-
Common
Chronic oil leaks
Valve covers, vacuum pump and cooler lines all leak eventually. Minor seepage is normal; active dripping needs attention.
-
Common
Electrical gremlins
Sensors, modules, tailgate latches and parking sensors fail regularly. Budget for diagnostic time — electrical work is billed by the hour.
-
Watch out
Very high repair costs
Parts and specialist labour run two to three times mainstream prices. A Land Rover without a repair budget is a bad idea.

Watch out
Air suspension and 5.0L chains
Check ride height after sitting overnight, and listen for chain rattle on 2010–2012 V8s. Both are four-figure repairs.

Common
Air suspension compressor
The compressor works hardest in winter and fails most then. If the suspension warning is on, negotiate the repair cost off the price.
