Known issues
-
Watch out
N20 timing chain (2012–2015)
Plastic chain guides on the N20 2.0 turbo wear out and the chain can snap, destroying the engine. A rattling chain on startup means repair immediately, not next month.
-
Common
Electric water pump failure
BMW’s electric water pumps fail suddenly with little warning, typically around 120,000–160,000 km, and overheating follows fast. Replace preventively with the thermostat.
-
Common
Oil leaks (valve cover, oil filter housing)
Gaskets harden and leak with age. An oil filter housing leak is the dangerous one — it can drip onto the serpentine belt and shred it into the engine.
-
Common
Cooling system plastics
Expansion tanks, hoses and fittings get brittle and burst. Replace them preventively before a long trip and always carry coolant.
-
Watch out
Above-average maintenance costs
Parts and labour run well above mainstream brands. A good independent BMW specialist — or an extended warranty on N20 cars — is worth every dollar.

Watch out
N20 chain guides (F30 328i, 2012–2015)
The F30 328i is the poster child for N20 chain failure. Listen for startup rattle and budget for a preventive chain job if it was never done.
BMW X5
-
Common
Air suspension and transfer case wear
Rear air bags sag with age and the transfer case actuator wears, causing binding in tight turns. Both are common past 150,000 km.
