Volkswagen common problems & weak spots
The most widely documented Volkswagen weak spots in Canada: what breaks, what it costs to fix, and what to inspect before buying used.
Known issues
-
Watch out
2.0T TSI timing chain tensioner (2008–2013)
Same EA888 tensioner flaw as Audi: the chain can skip and wreck the engine. Rattle on cold start means park it and fix it now.
-
Common
Carbon buildup on direct injection
FSI/TSI intake valves coke up, causing misfires around 100,000 km. Walnut blasting is the standard fix.
-
Common
DSG service neglect
DSG gearboxes need fluid and filter every 60,000 km; skipped service kills the mechatronics. Demand service records on any DSG car.
-
Common
Plastic water pump failures (2.0T)
The 2.0T’s plastic water pump housing cracks and leaks. A coolant smell or low level means inspect it now.
-
Watch out
1.8T oil sludge (older Passat/A4-era)
The old 1.8T sludges badly with conventional oil and long intervals — a documented engine killer. Only buy with full synthetic service history.
Volkswagen Jetta
-
Watch out
2.0T chain tensioner (2008–2013)
The Jetta GLI/2.0T of these years carries the EA888 tensioner risk. The 2.5 five-cylinder and later 1.8T are safer used buys.
Volkswagen Golf
-
Common
DSG service and carbon (GTI)
GTIs need DSG fluid proof every 60,000 km and likely a carbon cleaning past 120,000 km. Both are normal — neglect is the problem.
Volkswagen Tiguan
-
Watch out
2.0T chain and oil use (2009–2013)
Early Tiguans combine the tensioner risk with heavy oil use. Later 2018+ 2.0Ts are substantially better engines.
